Talavera pottery is a celebration of the culture and people of Puebla, Mexico. It is not mass produced, and each piece is a unique work of art.



Talavera can be used for both functional and decorative purposes, and comes in a variety of forms including plates, serving dishes, vases, and tiles.

ORIGIN - The style originated in the Spanish city of Talavera de la Reina in the 16th century, when artisans combined Islamic pottery techniques with Flemish glazing and Italian painting styles.

PRODUCTION - Talavera is made in the Mexican state of Puebla and nearby communities, using a variety of techniques and materials.

CLAY - A mixture of two clays, one dark and one light and slightly rose-colored, is used.

FIRING - Pieces are fired in kilns at temperatures of at least 800°C.

PAINTING - Talavera is hand-painted using six specific pigments that come from natural minerals.

GLAZING - A thick tin glaze is applied to give the pottery its signature milky-white look.
